How to Install OpenCart Manually

OpenCart is a free and open-source eCommerce web application built with PHP and MySQL. It is one of the most popular eCommerce platform to create online store to sell products globally. It has user friendly interface with lots of themes and extensions available to extend your functionality. Latest version of opencart comes with built in Search Engine Optimizaion (SEO) features. You can choose from lots of pre-built theme available according to your business requirement.

Many web hosting service providers provide one click installation, which make user to install opencart with some required details easily. Here we will explore opencart 3 installation using XAMPP local server manually.

How to Install OpenCart 3.0

1) Download opencart

First of all, you need to download latest version of opencart from offical website https://www.opencart.com.

After clicking, Free Download button, you will find two options: first, easy hosting with A2 hosting partner (Opencart Partner) and the second, download and host it on own server.

Unless you need a specific OpenCart version we highly recommend to download the latest stable version for optimal performance and security. You can see all stable previous releases by clicking “Check out the previous releases”.

We will choose secons option to download the opencart and install it on XAMPP server locally on our windows 10. Click on Download now button to start downloading.

2) Unzip the downloaded archive file and copy content in new folder

Now, Unzip (Extract) the downloaded file. Copy all the file from Upload folder which is available in extracted opencart folder. To create a project in XAMPP, go to C:\XAMPP\htdocs folder and create a folder for your project and paste all copied content in it.

Here we are creating project name opencart and copied all upload files in it. Now its time to create a database for our project.

3) Create Database

Now create the database. Go to the Localhost → phpMyAdmin → New → Create Database by visting http://localhost/phpmyadmin. Here we have created “opencart3” as my database name in phpmyadmin. You can name it as like you want.

4) Run Installation Wizard

Now, open the browser and visit the link http://localhost/opencart.

4.1) Opencart installer License agreement page

This is a general license agreement page, read all the general instructions if you want, before you hit the ‘Continue’ button to continue.

4.2) Pre-Installation page

On the pre-installation page make sure you see all the green tick mark status for every section like PHP settings, PHP extensions and permissions before moving further. In case you see a red mark for any status section, please go back and make the required changes to change from red to green. Especially if you find the missing and unwritable status for file permissions like shown below.

Here, You can set the new permission for the files. For example, here it is showing a ‘Missing’ error corresponding to the ‘config.php’ (which must be in the root folder here E:/xampp/htdocs/opencart/config.php ) so dont panic just go to root directory (opencart folder) and rename “config-dist.php” to ‘config.php’ thus, it will show you green Writable status. Same as, the error ‘Unwritable’ against the files present in the Admin folder( E:/xampp/htdocs/opencart/admin/config.php ). You need to rename the file ‘config-dist.php’ to ‘config.php’ to correct it. And finally when refresh pre-installation page you see all the Green ticks and Writable words, You can see below snapshot here.

After all issue solved, Now click on continue button for next step of installation.

4.3) Installer Configuration Page

Here at configuration page, you need to add the administration as well as database details. So, first, add the database details i.e. ‘Hostname, Username, Database, Port’ and then your administration details like ‘Username, Password, E-mail’ and click ‘Continue’ for next step.

4.4) Installation complete page

Here you will see the installation complete page with a message “Don’t forget to delete your installation directory! “. However, if you don’t delete now then you will see over and over again when you visit the page. So, just go to the root directory and delete the ‘install’ folder.

5) Login to admin page and visit your storefront

After Installation complete and deleting the install folder from root directory you can visit your eCommerce website admin panel by clicking “Login to your Administration” or by visiting http://localhost/opencart/admin/ and you will find admin login panel.

6) OpenCart Dashboard

In login page when you enter the right credentials(username & password) you will see the OpenCart DashBoard. And here you will see a important security notification asking you to move the storage directory to a new location ( Choose how to move the storage directory ). And this will be done automatically just select “Automatically Move” and path of your project, in my case it is “E:/xampp/htdocs/opencart/”. Now you just have to click on the ‘Move’ button.

Now you can see the OpenCart dashboard with options to manage your online store. There are various options such as Catalog, Extension, Design, Sales, Customers, Marketing, System, Report. And there various other sub-options under each category to beautify your storefront.

To view your storefront, click on your profile icon (at the top right corner) where you will have the option to view your storefront. As soon as you will click on the ‘Your Store’ option you will be launched to the home page of your store with the default theme and dummy products. you can also view your store by visiting this url ( http://localhost/opencart/ ). Use the plugins(Extensions) to enhance the functionality and flexibility of your store.

That’s it. Now you are ready to add your products and sell it online.
